Career History

With a B.Sc.(Hons.) degree in physics with astrophysics from the University of Manchester, I applied to the Met Office in 1989.  At interview, I made the mistake of mentioning I had worked with microwave radiometers at Jodrell Bank - hence I got posted to the Remote Sensing branch, where I have lived happily ever after. Well, at least until I was transferred to the Meterological Research Flight.

My work has included the analysis of AMSU-B radiometric and antenna tests, and the development of the new microwave radiometer ("Deimos") for the Met Office's research aircraft.

I also studied part-time for a Masters degree in Meteorology at University of Reading, including a dissertation on land surface emissivity at millimetre wavelengths.  These studies were completed in Sept 1999 and I was awarded a pass with distinction and a prize!

In the Meteorological Research Flight, I planned, conducted and analysed experiments to validate radiative transfer models in clear air using aircraft data gathered during jollies in Ascension Island and Kalmar, Sweden. This work culminated in an aircraft experiment I planned and lead to measure sea ice emissivity in the arctic.

In 2002 I then moved in with the Met Office's Satellite Applications group at Reading, where I worked on the development of a ground-based remote sensing system, and the assimilation of its data into Numerical Weather Prediction models. During this period I also submitted a thesis on the use of ground-based microwave radiometers to profile temperature and humidity and was awarded a PhD.
